A Motivational Learner
At the beginning of this chapter there’s a quote by the late American motivational speaker Zig Ziglar. The term ‘Motivational Speaker’ is not always a compliment. Some who feel they know better take great delight in scoffing at ‘happy talk’. That said, Zig Zigler was an icon within the speaking industry. He’s a speaker’s speaker. Many dream of being as skilful as him one day. To the millions who have heard him speak over many decades, he has offered enormous encouragement and has had a massive and long-term positive impact. He has also created life-enhancing attitudinal and goal-setting programmes specifically for children. Take it from me, this guy was a master communicator. I didn’t know Zig personally.
Let me share this brief story to illustrate his outstanding attitude to life. A number of years ago I travelled to the United States to attend the annual convention for NSA (National Speakers Association). Thousands of professional speakers come together to learn from each other. Some of the biggest names in the industry pay quite a lot of money to be there. If you are one of the star names asked to address the audience, you don’t get paid for it. Not only that, you still have to pay to attend the convention!
I attended a particular breakout session about how to collect and integrate your own funny, true-life stories into presentations that will entertain and educate by the wonderfully funny Jeanne Robertson.
I’d got there early and was sitting near the front. I listened and took copious notes. Sitting in the row directly behind me was Zig Ziglar. This legend of the speaking industry was there to learn. Despite his many decades of world-class experience, his mind was still open. This is the mark of someone with an outstanding attitude to life.
How open are you to developing an attitude that can and almost certainly would open you up to new and exciting possibilities? Or would that be a “no”?
I hope you can now start to see how a healthy self-esteem can set the stage for a brighter, more upbeat attitude towards yourself, your life and those you come into contact with. The combination of a healthy self-esteem and a positive attitude inevitably contributes to your own sense of happiness. The next two chapters look closely at your current happiness levels, your happiness mindset and the impact this has on all of your relationships: family, work, social and especially intimate relationships.
The next chapter is all about ‘unhappiness’. If you tend to feel unhappy about your current situation, you could gain valuable and helpful insights from this chapter. If you are a genuinely happy person you might be tempted to skip it. Please don’t. You’ll discover how some deeply unhappy people latch on to happy people, and like leeches, suck out as much happiness as they can under the mistaken belief that the more they suck, the happier they will become.
